Description: At the end of the 80's the island of Puerto Rico was struck by hurricane Hugo, one of the most destructive in history. In the community of Cantera, at the eastern side of capital city San Juan, the already organized community leadership worked together to make their reclaims heard by the authorities. This process results in a law project which gave Cantera the tools to rebuilt their community in a participative way.
In the constant improvement of Cantera the most iconic and influential architectural project is the Centro Comunitario para la Peninsula de Cantera. This minimalistic and inspiring building is the physical space needed for the community to develop their ideas and work together on them. The building was designed brilliantly and consciously by architect firm GA+NIF, which effectively integrated the community's needs and the site challenges.
