Title: Points of Light
Category: Social Impact Design
Description: It began with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Fort Worth needing to create a vestibule for the safety of its members and staff. After engaging architect Bart Shaw, new goals emerged to take the project beyond function to new ideals of brand recognition, transparency, community awareness, and poetic expression. The design opens the building up, inviting people through the door toward a friendly face. At night, the elements reach beyond the building’s footprint, creating a strong visual presence in the neighborhood. Every day, children, staff, and parents walk underneath an aluminum plate shade canopy at the entry. The flat plane has holes, allowing the afternoon sun to shaft points of light, creating a visual symbol of the children whose life paths have been altered by the Boys and Girls Club. Each year, holes are drilled for each child who completes the program and goes on to college; this year there were ten. Each successive year, they will walk under increasing points of light, which will bounce and play on those walking ahead. This creates a growing awareness of the great work at the Boys and Girls Club and in their community, empowering them with inspiration, pride, and hope.
