In Witness: Inception Shannon Gathings, AIA, NOMA, of Duvall Decker Architects talks about the preliminary design process for The Tougaloo Center for Justice and Equity in Jackson, MS. She shares her experience as an architecture student reading bell hooks article, “Choosing the Margin as a Space of Radical Openness” for the first time and how it inspires her thinking about architecture. Duvall Decker has been leading inclusive and community-focused design processes in Mississippi for over twenty years. The Tougaloo Center for Justice and Equity is being developed as a partnership between the Episcopal Church and Tougaloo College as a global center for study, remembrance, and community. Stakeholders include The Episcopal Church Building Fund, The Community Foundation of Mississippi, The Episcopal Diocese of Mississippi as well as community organizations and the Tougaloo College broader community.
