Bonton : A Beacon of Hope

Bonton is a neighborhood in South Dallas. It is what the USDA classifies as a “food desert”, meaning there are no grocery stores within a square mile. It is because of this lack of fresh food that the community is facing grave health problems. Seven years ago, Daron Babcock moved into the community and planted a garden in his yard. That garden has turned into a 1 acre farm, and then into a 40 acre farm, and now into a Market and Cafe where the community can purchase the fresh food and vegetables that are grown on the farm.

This building will make Bonton no longer classify as a food desert.

AIA Dallas sponsors an Emerging Leaders Program where young up-and-coming architects donate their time and talents to a community cause of their choosing. In 2015, the class chose to design the Market and Cafe for Bonton Farms.

Our film takes a look at the impact architecture can play in a community where it seems hope of a healthy life had been lost.
