Title: Place and Purpose: Colorado Building Workshop's Cottonwood Cabins
Description: Colorado Building Workshop is a graduate design build program at CU Denver. In 2019 they designed and constructed six cabins and an outdoor kitchen for Cottonwood Gulch Expeditions in rural New Mexico. The cabins enable Cottonwood Gulch Expeditions to expand their offerings, and this increased availability allows them to serve more youth campers (dubbed “trekkers”) from populations who don’t typically have equal access to immersive outdoor experiences. Colorado Building Workshop draws upon the unique characteristics of the camp as well as the landscape in its design. Various aspects of the cabins nod to the camp’s communal “porch culture,” their belief in giving youth agency to define their own experiences, the existing structures at the camp (the oldest set of cabins was designed by Kurt Vonneget Sr, architect and father of the famous author), and the rural New Mexico landscape.
