Title: Woodlawn Park
Category: Diversity and Inclusion
Description: The Burnham at Woodlawn Park is the third new construction project in a series of redevelopment projects that are replacing the former Grove Parc Plaza Apartments in the Woodlawn neighborhood of Chicago. The Burnham and other new buildings not only preserve affordable housing and diverse incomes in the community but also employ architectural strategies to minimize gentrification and enhance safety and community engagement. All the architectural elements from massing to interior design are targeting social concerns in the neighborhood. The newly developed Woodlawn Park buildings sit just south of the University of Chicago in Woodlawn, a historic Southside neighborhood that has in recent years struggled with crime and disinvestment. The new developments are meant to be a bridge in the neighborhood and encourage a sense of ownership among residents of the building and all members of the community.
