Title: Boxville
Category: Empowering Lives
Description: The story begins with the redevelopment of a vacant lot on the southeast corner of 51st and Calumet into a community garden. The first focus was on culinary based enterprises and has grown into a thriving development composed of a variety of small businesses spread along two city blocks. Urban Juncture started with a mission to rejuvenate the once thriving community corridors of the Bronzeville community. The latest two developments, the Bronzeville Bike Box, which opened in (2013) and Boxville (2017) use a non-traditional building type, shipping containers, as an alternative to brick and mortar, which can be expensive for small entrepreneurs. The projects have served as a catalyst to enable small, local entrepreneurs to be major players in the revitalization of their own community despite the civic disinvestment. The Architecture and Design firm, Solquest Design Unlimited has been involved in four major projects along this two-stretch block of East 51st Street. Both Developer and Designers live within 2 miles of grounds zero, making it a partnership that truly grew from the concrete
