Title: The People's Vision
Category: Preservation and Repurposing
Description: The People's Vision tells the story of the importance of art and places of artistic expression for African Americans. People of colour use art to express how they feel and what their experiences have been, and in many ways it captures their history and forms their identity. The Vision Theatre located in the creative industry enclave known as Leimert Park has for the past 8 decades been anchoring the Black community in South L.A., even as it fights for its place to exist. The theatre, which has been under renovation since 2008, is one of the last two art deco theatres in the City. This theatre has been the cornerstone of community-based development for its residents. Vision now positions itself as an incubator for the next generation of Black artists in South Los Angeles. Vision, an icon of history, community and culture, has proven that architecture can sometimes be the only avenue of expression.
